As one of the last large and affordable public beaches in Palm Beach County, Lake Worth Public Beach has long been protected from over-development due to a provision in the City Charter restricting building height to 65 feet east of A1A.
Recently, the City of Lake Worth Beach considered an amendment to the City Charter that would have put removal of the building height restrictions up for a referendum vote in the next election. If put to a referendum vote and removal of the height restrictions from the City Charter prevailed, height restrictions would be subject to change and implemented via the City's comprehensive plan. Lake Worth Beach residents had concerns about the restrictions being relaxed if removed from the City Charter and ensuring adequate public participation with any process changes.
Surfrider has long supported height restrictions for development in coastal areas. These restrictions help to maintain a lower density in critical areas that face challenges from rising sea levels, coastal squeeze, erosion, and sustaining public beach access. After discussing the proposed amendment to the City of Lake Worth Beach's Charter at a chapter meeting, the Surfrider Palm Beach County Chapter mobilized quickly. Chapter members attended and provided public comment at the City Council Meeting on October 6, 2025. In opposing the removal of the height restrictions from the Charter, Surfrider members emphasized that increasing building height restrictions opens the door for increased density, use, and pressures in already vulnerable coastal areas. They also shared their personal experiences enjoying Lake Worth Beach and its natural beauty. Following significant public comment, the City Council voted to retain the height restrictions in the City Charter.
The Palm Beach County Chapter commends the Lake Worth City Council for responding to public concerns and maintaining the coastal development height restrictions. We celebrate this victory and will continue to advocate for healthy beaches and thriving coastal communities!
